Lactoferrin is a multifunctional body protein. Its name is derived from lacto, or milk, because this protein was first discovered in cow's milk. Ferrin refers to iron because lactoferrin has iron-binding and transporting properties. Properties and benefits Lactoferrin is found in nasal, respiratory, and gastrointestinal mucosa, tears, saliva, bile, pancreatic juice, urine, and mucus. A person receives a large amount of lactoferrin by drinking colostrum and breast milk immediately after birth. Although our bodies produce their own lactoferrin, we never consume as high a dose of lactoferrin as we did early in life.
