Some chemicals, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals, are not easily reduced and are stored in various tissues. POPs, in particular, tend to accumulate in fatty tissues due to their lipophilicity and can take many years to decompose. Polybrominated flame retardants (PBDEs), organochlorine pesticides (such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)), and products of industrial activities and waste combustion, such as PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and dioxins, are important POPs.
There is a chronic low-level release of COPD primarily through adipose tissue, but this release can be much higher during a weight loss phase.
As the adipotox study shows, serum POP concentrations gradually increase throughout the weight loss phase, liver and lipid balances improve less, and over time, the total POP load decreases by only 10–15%, indicating reuptake by adipose tissue.
Metabolizing and conjugating these POPs at the time of their release and reducing them should be an integral part of a weight loss strategy.
